Hi all. Seeing as this'll be my first ever review on this site, I guess I should properly introduce myself. My name is Nicholas Rocher, and I am a writer (not published as of yet though) and I thought I'd try my hand at reviewing movies, series, books and music. The Blue Parktonian is hopefully the start of a long and fruitful journey, as I give you all my opinion on movies, series, books and music, be it old or new, good or bad, it doesn't matter, if it's worth covering, I'll have a review out on this site.
Anyways, on to my very first review. This will also be the first music review on this site, and I'm actually pretty pleased I chose this particular song to cover. So, the song is called Swan Song, and it is by English singer and songwriter Dua Lipa. This song comes off of the soundtrack to the movie (as of the writing of this article, it is currently out in cinemas right now) Alita: Battle Angel.
Now, Dua Lipa might be a relatively new artist, but I can honestly say that I can't find a single song from her that I have disliked. Before I heard this song I am currently reviewing, my previous encounters with her were New Rules and a collaboration with Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, called One Kiss. Both those songs are easily two of my favorites from last year.
So, what do I think of Swan Song? I really like this song. In fact, I'd say that this is now my favorite Dua Lipa song. In the title of this review, I said that this song had become my new inspirational anthem, and that is no lie. Last year, I went through quite a lot of upheavel in my personal and academic life that really made me feel down and out. This song, despite its title, is about someone who gets back up after feeling like everything was over for them, and I can personally relate to these lyrics. One line in particular, "What is the point of doing nothing at all, watching it fall?" really resonated with me, and Dua Lipa's delivery of the line makes it all the more powerful.
I especially like the production and beat of the song. There is just something about the chanting in the background of the song that really gets my blood pumping, and the drums and horns sound epic in scale. Dua Lipa's singing really matches the tone and content of the lyrics, and her range is impressive, to say the least. I especially like how she blends the chorus and the beginning of the second verse together. I do believe she has the potential to be the next big female pop star, I personally find her a far more talented and passionate performer than the last two big female pop stars of the last nine years, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.
To summarize all that I have said above, I personally think that, of all the songs that have come out so far in 2019, this is currently my favorite. I wasn't sure how Dua Lipa would follow up her debut album, but this is a good step for her, and, hearing that she might release her second album this year, I eagerly wait to see what else this promising artist (she won a Grammy for Best New Artist recently) has in store for us. This song gets a 5 out of 5 from me.
