Before I begin, let me first say that I am not a huge fan of love songs. I'm not a big fan of romance in general, to be perfectly honest. I've had one serious relationship that ended a long time ago and, to be perfectly honest, i enjoy being single as a Pringle. That's not to say that I am completely anti-romance or anti-love. If the right person ever came into my life again, I would consider taking another shot at love, and I still cry every time at the way the romance between Jack and Rose ended in Titanic (hint: if you haven't seen Titanic, the way this budding romance ends is one of the great Shakespearean tragedies of our time), but love and romance simply don't rank very highly in my list of priorities.

With that said, Senorita was already facing an uphill battle the first time I heard it. Making that uphill battle even more difficult were the two artists behind this love song. Shawn Mendes has been around for a few years now, and I can safely say that he hasn't made a single song I like or would love to listen to again. He just reminds me of a discount Justin Bieber with a worse voice and the personality of a late model Toyota Corolla. Camilla Cabelo fares a bit better in my books, compared to Shawn Mendes, but that's not saying much, as I only ever liked two of her songs, Crying In The Club (the first song I ever heard her in) and Havana (the Spanish version with Daddy Yankee, not the garbage English version with Young Thug on it). However, that still doesn't make me think of her in any way beyond just a second tier pop star desperately trying to break into the top tier of pop stardom.

So, sounds like this song should've been a total and absolute dumpster fire, doesn't it? Well, not exactly. I actually really like Senorita. I'd go so far as to say that, as of right now, it is my favorite song on the charts right now. I thought Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabelo would draw the worst out of each other, but the exact opposite happened. They play off of each other so well, to the point that I truly believe that they are lovers with a strange kink for the Spanish word for "lady".

Another thing I love about the song is the guitar playing in the background. It sounds so very different from everything else on the radio, which is dominated by dark, samey trap beats with speaker destroying bass and bubblegum pop (ahem, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran). As much as I love the guitar, the real revelations in this song are Camilla Cabelo and Shawn Mendes.

I wouldn't necessarily say that Camilla Cabelo isn't talented, but she's never really blown me away with her vocal abilities. Even in the two songs that I like, it was difficult for me to say that her voice is memorable or even noteworthy. She proved me very wrong with Senorita. Her voice doesn't really have the power of someone like Adele or Katy Perry or Taylor Swift, but, unlike in Be The Same (where her voice packs all the power of a light breeze), here she owns it, and still manages some impressive notes.

Shawn Mendes, who, as I said previously, never really entertained me as a performer, has never managed to convey sexiness or heat (at least in my opinion). All his songs, while attempting to be romantic, often come off as weird and often predatory (Better Than He Can, anyone?). However, he seems to have found that sexiness and the heat that I always felt he wanted to convey, but always failed to. I'd go so far as to say that, as of right now, Mendes is a superior artist to Justin Bieber in every way.

So, how best to summarize my feelings towards this song, and actually give it a verdict? Personally, I hope this song becomes bigger than it currently is, as between this, Old Town Road (which I covered a while back) and Bad Guy (as much as I love that song and Billie Eilish, I think it is a bit overplayed), I'd personally take Senortia any day. To give this song a proper rating, I give it a 4,1 out of 5. It is very good, and I can recommend it to almost anyone.
